Envelopes
Most envelopes are printed in 1 or 2 colors, offset printing presses. Digital toner based printing of envelopes is usually not recommended. Standard ink colors save you money, as special ordered inks colors can add significantly to your cost. Ordering small quantities of generic envelopes can also be costly because of the high “setup cost” of offset printing. We recommend buy 1,000 instead of 500. Envelopes come in several classes and many sizes within each class. Specially manufactured envelopes usually require a minimum for 5,000 to 10,000. Generic envelopes are produced in very large quantities and are therefore quite inexpensive as compared to envelopes made of high papers such as 25% cotton fibers and brand named papers.
COMMERCIAL is one class of envelopes. They come in sizes #6.25, #6.5, #7, #7.75, #8.625, #9, !0, #11, #12, And #14. Many are available with a clear poly window, and or with inside security tinting. Still others have two clear poly windows and other special features. The standard business envelope is a “Commercial #10. A # 9 envelope is designed to fit inside of a #10 for return response. The #6.75 is a standard which is often used of invoice billing and smaller personal notes.
POLICY envelopes are used to for convenient document storage / transportation. Common sizes are: #10 (4.125×9.5), #11 (4.5×10.375), #12 (4.75×11) and #14 (5×11.5)
BARONIAL envelopes are appropriate for formal announcement and invitation. The most common sizes are for flat or folded pieces 4×5 which fits into a #5.5 (4.375×5.75) and the Lee Size sometimes called a #7 Baronial which is 5.25 x 7.25. This size is obviously made for a 5×7 inserted piece.
CATALOG envelopes come in many sizes too, but the most common are the #1 which is a 6×9 and the #3 which is 9×12. Brown Kraft or white are common. Twenty eight pound weight is the most common, but lighter white papers and heavier paper envelopes and available.
